- Introduction

The city of Tabriz as the industrial hub of the northwest region of the country as well as the second-largest industrial city in the country has large and mother industries. Its major industries include power plants, refineries, petrochemicals and other large industrial units such as automotive, tractors, machinery and equipment manufacturing, segmentation industries, propulsion, chemical and cellulosic industries, food, pharmaceuticals, health, metal, textile and garment industries. In addition to the proximity to the Aras free trade zone, the existence of foreign investment industrial towns, as well as the twenty-eight industrial towns and numerous small-scale industrial activities provide enormous potential for the work of chemical engineers of varying tendencies. The University of Tabriz as the second oldest university in Iran as well as one of the most prestigious universities in our country, despite having strong engineering fields such as mechanics, electrical and chemistry faculty with various departments such as applied chemistry, it lacked an important major in chemical and petroleum engineering and this is a major shortcoming for the University of Tabriz, which, as a comprehensive mother university in the northwestern region.

- History

The first idea of establishing the department of chemical engineering was formed in the mechanical engineering department of the faculty of engineering in 1988, and it was decided to begin accepting students for this field in the 1990 academic year. Then, with a two-year break, the department of chemical engineering was re-formed in 1992. Finally, twelve years after obtaining the first permit for the establishment of a chemical engineering from the Ministry of Science, the founding core of chemical engineering was established in 2003 under the supervision of the mechanical engineering department head and 40 students were accepted in the field of chemical engineering from September 2005. After three years of successful teaching activities in the department of chemical engineering at the undergraduate level, the department was granted a license to undergo a master's degree in 2008, and in September 2011, a specialized Ph.D. program and student acceptance began. After six years of continuous teaching and research activity of faculty members and students, the faculty of chemical and petroleum engineering at the University of Tabriz was established in 2011.
